New Dead Project - "This Means Everything"

While we often search for new and interesting bands in the west it might be worthwhile to check the East too. For example, Hungary, the home of the “New Dead Project”.

Recently, they released a 9 song CD entitled “this means everything”, which is a fine piece of melodic modern hardcore. But as many other bands they draw their influences not only from hardcore, but they have a more “punky” edge in their songs. As Ruiner might be a hardcore reference, Strike Anywhere or even Good Riddance fit as well. (The singer’s voice might be one reason why these bands come to mind…)

But as I said, it is still a hardcore record, with powerful crew vocals and some nice breaks, and they really got some groove going, for example in the song “learning to fly”, which is one of the highlights of the release. Also it is melodic hardcore and this “melodic” stems from two things, the one is that they have some cleaner vocal parts (not clean, but cleaner!) and also the very catchy guitars that really fill the songs and give them a special touch.

Lyrically, it is also kind of special, somewhere in between desperation and “positivity”, but the lyrics have a great eloquence, and it’s not like they are using the same slogans always again, but somehow they find a way to express things, that have sometimes been said before, in a new way… “there are many ways to set yourself on fire and you don't need gasoline.”

So, all in all I think the record is pretty much a thing for everyone, and a good example of how the eastern European hardcore scene has evolved in the last years…
